MANDALUYONG YOUTH GROUP IN MOUNTAIN CLEAN-UP IN MT. BANAHAW

Members of the Young Journalists Association of Mandaluyong (Y-JAM) will be conducting their annual mountain clean-up along the lower slopes of Mt. Banahaw in Quezon as the highlight activity of their overnight Nature Awareness and Environmental Workshop set on February 16 and 17.

Composed of high school campus journalists from different public and private schools in Mandaluyong, this 10 year old anti-drug abuse youth group embarks on various values-formation program including sports and leadership seminars and regular writing workshops, to offer alternatives to youth other than illegal drugs or vices.

"City-bred young people need  to experience the beauty of nature and in so doing, awaken in them that needed sense of ownership and responsibility to protect the environment , and this annual trekking in Mt. Banahaw gives them that opportunity," said Y-JAM adviser Lito Cinco whose various programs for the youth of Mandaluyong are supported by Mayor Benhur Abalos and the city government on a regular basis, Mayor Abalos being one of the founders of the organization.

'"We are proud of the involvement of our youth in this environmental project, and we will continue supporting such activities that promotes this kind of awareness among young people," said Mayor Abalos.

For this year, the activity also got support from other well-meaning companies and people like Cebuana Lhuillier through the PJL Foundation and David's Salon, which last year also supported Y-JAM's inter-school spelling bee and Christmas gift-giving in Mt. Banahaw, Mandaluyong businessmen Nandy Charvet , Albert Almendralejo,  and Alex Wang, and members of Paco Catholic School Class' 72 to which Cinco belongs.

Around 24 students and teachers are expected to join the event which will also feature an essay-writing and photo contest for the students who will participate to deepen their learning from this nature adventure experience.

CEBUANA LHUILLIER SUPPORTS CAMPAIGN FOR FIL-FOREIGN ATHLETES

For a long time now, Philippine sports has been trying to catch up with the rest of the world in sports and one of the paths taken by local National Sports Associations (NSA) is to recruit Fil-Foreign athletes or those with pure Filipino blood but born and raised in other countries.

Among the sports that have benefited from this recruitment program are the Philippine Amateur Swimming Association (PASA) with US-based swimmer Miguel Molina winning 4 gold medals in the recent 24th South East Asian (SEA) Games in Thailand late in 2006, the Philippine Tennis Association (PHILTA), with the recruitment of full blooded Filipinos Cecil Mamiit and Eric Taino for both its Davis Cup and SEA Games campaigns last year, and even at the Asian Games in 2006, basketball, both for its men's and women's national teams, and beach volleyball among others.

Sportsman-businessman Jean Henri Lhuillier, whose passion and love for sports both as an athlete and patron are acknowledged in Philippine sports, has been actively supporting the development of sports in the Philippines with emphasis on softball, being the president of the Amateur Softball Association of the Philippines  (ASAPHIL), tennis, where he is the team manager of the men's team in both the Davis Cup and regional meets, and basketball, where he has been involved the most for the longest time.

His companies, Cebuana Lhuillier, Le Soleil de Boracay, a high end resort hotel in Boracay, and Cebuana Lhuillier Services Corporation, through its Pera Padala service, is the major backer of Mamiit and Taino for their international campaigns, working hand in hand with PHILTA and the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) for the funding of the tennis players' international stints.

Mamiit was instrumental in the Philippines' Davis Cup victory over Kuwait last year which brought the Philippines to Group I after a long absence, and he also brought home a gold medal in the men's singles event plus two silver medals and a bronze medal in the last SEA Games.

In basketball, Cebuana Lhuillier was previously involved in a long term men's basketball development program, but last year, Lhuillier was among the first to respond to the call for help by the women's basketball team then scheduled to play in the South East Asian basketball (SEABA) championship in Thailand.

And through its sponsorship of the RP-Cebuana women's cage team, together with other basketball - loving people and companies in the Philippines who were tapped by the Basketball Association of the Philippines - Samahang Basketball ng Pilipinas (BAP-SBP), the local ruling body for the sport, the team finished a strong second to Thailand, its best showing so far in the tournament.

Quarterbacking the team, coached by former professional basketball player Fritz Gaston, was Vicky Brick, a former Division I player from the University of Maryland in the United States who was contracted to play for the national team until the SEA Games.

At the SEA Games, two more Fil-Foreign players joined Brick and the team, Fil-Am Melissa Jacob and Fil-Syrian Amira Isa; however, the team encountered tougher opposition in Thailand and could only finish with a bronze medal behind Thailand and Malaysia.

Under the BAP-SBP program, the NSA is open to any legitimate Fil-Foreign basketball player who may be interested to play for the women's national team, and Cebuana Lhuillier is presently working on a project where interested Fil-Am athletes, regardless of the sport they play, can send their letter of interest together with their credentials and Cebuana Lhuillier will endorse the papers to the NSA concerned. Interested parties may send their letter of interest together with family and educational background plus athletic credential and records to atletang.pinoy@yahoo.com

National coach Gaston confirmed that the BAP-SBP will always be on the look-out for basketball talents to beef up the team and with Cebuana Lhuillier lending a helping hand, more talents may just emerge.

"WE HAVE GOOD CHANCES AGAINST JAPAN" - LHUILLIER

The forthcoming Group I Davis Cup tie match between the Philippines and Japan, set February 8 to 10 at the Rizal Memorial tennis courts at the RMSC, will be a big test for the men's national tennis team headed by Fil-Am and SEA Games hero Cecil Mamiit.

Backstopping Mamiit, who played a key role in the one gold, 2 silver 1 bronze medal haul of the team in the last SEA Games, including the singles championship, are American-based Eric Taino, and homegrown talents Johnny Arcilla, Patrick Tierro, and future tennis starts Kyle Dandan and Pablo Olivarez.

And according to sportsman-businessman Jean Henri Lhuillier, who has been named anew as the Philippine Davis Cup team manager with Cebuana Lhuillier as the official team sponsor, "I believe we have good chances against Japan next month and our boys have been training regularly in preparation for this first Group I matches we will be playing after a long time. The fact that the team played together at the SEA Games before this Davis Cup will be in our favor and of course with the Philippines hosting the event here, we will have the home town and home court advantage," said Lhuillier.

The fact that the RP tennis team members also were given the opportunity to play in some international tournaments prior to the Davis Cup match should also put them in the needed competition mode and condition, Lhuillier added.

Mamiit was set to play this January in Hawaii and China while Arcilla and Tierro were scheduled to play in India to serve as tune-up matches.

On his part, Mamiit before he left for the United States last month said "Japan will be tough but I think we are pretty much even with their players now even if they may be favored on paper because they have more internationally ranked players, in the late 90's, I remember the Philippines beating Japan in a Group I meeting. Crowd support will be important and since they will be probably coming in from cold weather, the playing conditions should be in our favor. But still, we should always give respect to them as strong opponents and we need to continue to work harder."

If the Philippines gets past Japan, next opponent will be the winner of the other Group I match between India and Uzbekistan.

As early as now, the Philippine Lawn Tennis Association (PHILTA) is leaving no stone unturned in their preparation to host this important Group I match between Japan and the Philippines.

A JOB WELL DONE FOR ASAPHIL

The International Softball Federation (ISF) definitely had a very successful convention last Oct. 24th to the 25th at the EDSA Shangri-La Hotel in Manila, Philippines with a lot of positive results from the 3-day event.

In fact it was a record turnout of member countries as 83 nations from 5 regions of the world were represented in the gathering, the biggest in the history of the Federation, and host organization the Amateur Softball Association of the Philippines (ASAPHIL), headed by sportsman-businessman Jean Henri Lhuillier as President certainly deserves credit for a job well done.

The event may have just been for a few days but as far as the ASAPHIL, and its secretary-general Danny Francisco was concerned, the preparation for the event took their organization months to put in place, with a lot of resources and manpower provided by Cebuana Lhuillier Pawnshop and Le Soleil de Boracay, two companies of Mr. Lhuillier which sponsored the event.

There were a thousand and one things to be done and last-minute details to be arranged prior to the Congress itself, but everything was delivered in the end to the satisfaction of ISF.

"It was certainly worth all our efforts as we saw the Congress delegates arriving one by one, and later on, working seriously with their respective groups and commissions, I believe the results can speak for themselves. For the Philippines, it was certainly a big honor for us to have been chosen as the host of this year's ISF Congress, it gave us the opportunity to showcase the Philippines to the rest of the world, at the same time, we were able to show once more our capabilities to host big international events as we have done in the past," said Lhuillier.

The event resulted to a lot of both pre-event and post event print, radio, and television media coverage as ASAPHIL left no stone unturned in making the event a well-publicized one in local newspapers, including two television news releases, and one where ISF president Don Porter and Lhuillier were interviewed in a highly popular sports talk show that was aired all the way to mainland USA.

At the pre-event press conference, Lhuillier cited the possibility of the Philippines making a bid to host a world softball championship in his country, after all, the Philippines is considered one of the major softball powers in this part of the world, in fact the Philippines won both the men's and women's softball championship at the 2005 South East Asia Games (SEAG), placed second to Japan in the Asian Men's Softball Championship, while the women's team finished in the top 4 in the 2007 Asian Women's championship.

Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) president Jose "Peping" Cojuangco was also a special guest at the welcome dinner tendered by Lhuillier for the ISF officials and delegates, while legislator and local softball patron Congressman Jack Duavit was the guest at the closing dinner, also sponsored by Lhuillier.

It was indeed a job well done for the host country.
